Afghan Hound — Dogs

Which dog breed is shown?

Which dog breed is shown?

Answer

Afghan Hound

The story behind the answer

Afghan Hound is correct. This sighthound has a distinctive long, silky coat covering the whole body, a prominent topknot, a narrow, refined head, high hipbones, and a tail often with a ringed tip—traits visible here. By contrast, the Borzoi’s coat is wavier with a long “Roman” nose, the Saluki usually has a short body coat with feathered ears and tail (less profuse overall), and the Irish Setter is a red gundog with a flatter, feathery coat and a different build.

Originating in Afghanistan’s mountains, Afghan Hounds are ancient hunters of gazelle and hare; their luxurious coat protected them from harsh climates. Remember: “Afghan = abundant all-over silk and aloof elegance,” a hallmark of this independent, catlike sighthound.
