The story behind the answer

The Gallipoli Campaign ran from April 1915 to January 1916, so 1915–1916 is correct. Although World War I lasted 1914–1918, the Dardanelles operation didn’t begin until 1915 and ended with Allied evacuations in early 1916—so it neither started in 1914 nor extended to 1918.

Gallipoli was an Allied attempt to seize the Dardanelles, open a sea route to Russia, and potentially knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war. Fierce Ottoman resistance, led in part by Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk), and difficult terrain doomed the amphibious assault. The campaign is central to Australian and New Zealand memory (ANZAC Day, April 25). Memory tip: “Galli-15-16”—Gallipoli straddled the years fifteen to sixteen.
