Brazil was a colony of Portugal. After Pedro Álvares Cabral’s 1500 landing, the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) had already placed much of today’s Brazil in Portugal’s sphere, shaping the colony for more than three centuries. Portuguese language, law, and Catholicism took root, and the economy revolved around sugar (and later coffee), tragically fueled by the transatlantic slave trade.
