The story behind the answer

Brazil is correct: in 1500, Pedro Álvares Cabral’s Portuguese fleet, en route to India, veered west and made landfall on 22 April, charting the coast and claiming it for Portugal under the Treaty of Tordesillas. The land was first called Terra de Vera Cruz and soon “Brazil,” after the valuable brazilwood (pau-brasil) that fueled early trade.
