A calming signal is a behavior dogs use to reduce tension or avoid conflict—essentially saying, “I’m not a threat; let’s keep things cool.” Examples include yawning, lip licking, turning the head or body away, sniffing the ground, blinking softly, moving slowly, lifting a paw, or approaching in a curve. These signals can also help the dog calm itself when feeling unsure.

The term was popularized by Norwegian trainer Turid Rugaas, who observed that dogs rely on these subtle cues long before growling or snapping. Recognizing them lets you intervene early—giving space, slowing your movements, or easing pressure.
