Praia is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, located on Santiago Island. It hosts the country’s main government institutions and serves as the political and economic hub. The name “Praia” means “beach” in Portuguese—fitting for this Atlantic archipelago off West Africa. Historically, Praia became the colonial capital in the 18th century, replacing nearby Ribeira Grande (now Cidade Velha).
