The great medieval trade fairs took place in the northeastern county centered on Troyes, Provins, Lagny, and Bar‑sur‑Aube. Its counts guaranteed safe‑conduct, impartial courts, standard weights and measures, and debt enforcement, drawing Italian, Flemish, English, and Iberian merchants. Those protections—and the region’s crossroads location between the Mediterranean and northern Europe—made it the premier marketplace of the 12th–13th centuries.

Beyond goods like wool, cloth, spices, and furs, the fairs fostered financial innovation.
