These laws targeted visible markers of status—restricting fabrics (silk, velvet), furs (ermine), colors (purple, scarlet), jewelry, and even the length of shoes—so commoners couldn’t emulate nobles. They aimed to preserve social hierarchies and moral order, and sometimes to protect domestic production or limit imported luxuries.

After the Black Death, labor shortages raised wages and allowed merchants and craftsmen to buy finery; rulers responded with statutes like England’s 1363 “Statutes of Apparel” and Italian city ordinances. Penalties included fines and confiscation, yet enforcement was spotty and workarounds common. Similar rules also capped wedding banquets and funeral pomp, revealing elites’ anxiety about status competition as much as any real economic need.
