What reform movement is linked to the Abbey of Cluny?

Founded in 910, the Abbey of Cluny became the nucleus of a monastic renewal that placed houses under direct papal protection, freed them from local lords, and tightened adherence to the Rule of St. Benedict. Cluny emphasized disciplined communal prayer and a rich liturgy, coordinating hundreds of affiliated priories under one abbot—an unprecedented, Europe-wide monastic network.

Its prestige radiated across Christendom and helped lay groundwork for later papal efforts against simony and clerical marriage. In contrast, the Cistercians (from 1098) reacted against Cluny’s growing wealth with a return to austere simplicity, and the Gregorian reforms were driven from Rome rather than a single monastery. “Benedictine reforms” describes broad adherence to Benedict’s rule, not a distinct 10th-century movement tied to one abbey.
