Cocker Spaniel — Dogs
Which dog breed is shown?
Answer
Cocker Spaniel
The story behind the answer
This is a Cocker Spaniel: note the compact build, rounded skull, large expressive eyes, and long, silky feathered ears. The muzzle is shorter and softer than an English Springer Spaniel’s, and the overall frame is smaller. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed with a flatter face and finer bone, while a Basset Hound has very short legs and extremely long ears.
Cockers were bred as gundogs to flush and retrieve woodcock—hence the name. Known as the “merry cocker” for their cheerful, waggy demeanor, they carry a lush, wavy coat and smooth, flowing outline. Memory tip: “Cocker = compact woodcock hunter with cuddly, rounded features; Springer = springier, leggier field partner.”
