Birds
Name this bird:
Answer
Common Buzzard
Explanation
Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) is the widespread European buteo: broad, rounded wings, relatively short, barred tail, and highly variable plumage often showing a pale breast and dark carpal patches with pale “commas” in the underwing. It differs from the Red-tailed Hawk (a mainly North American species with an adult red tail), Rough-legged Buzzard (feathered legs and a pale tail with a bold dark terminal band), and Northern Goshawk (an accipiter with a long tail, narrow wings, and strong white eyebrow).
Common Buzzards thrive in farmland and woodland edges, frequently soaring on thermals or perching along roads. Their cat-like, mewing call is a classic sound of the European countryside. Memory aid: in Europe, the mewing, broad-winged raptor you see most often is the Common Buzzard.
