What should you do if your dog seems unusually tired and refuses food?

Contact a veterinarian because sudden lethargy paired with refusal to eat can signal serious problems—pain, fever, dehydration, GI obstruction, toxin exposure, organ disease, or infections. Waiting, trying home remedies, or pushing food can delay care and worsen outcomes. Vets can assess vitals, run tests, and start fluids or treatment before a minor issue becomes an emergency.

Dogs often hide illness (a survival trait), so when energy and appetite drop together, it’s a red flag rather than “just being picky.” Remember: LAF—Lethargy + Appetite loss = Fetch the vet. Seek immediate help if other signs appear (vomiting, diarrhea, pale gums, labored breathing, collapse), or if the dog is a puppy, senior, or has chronic conditions.
