What is a “reliquary”?

The story behind the answer

Reliquaries were crafted to house sacred relics—bones, hair, clothing, or objects associated with saints or Christ—keeping them safe and making them visible for veneration. In medieval churches they often sat on altars or were carried in processions, focusing devotion and serving as tangible links to the holy.

Many were masterpieces of metalwork in gold or silver, studded with gems, and sometimes shaped like body parts (a jeweled arm for an arm-bone) or miniature churches. Possessing renowned relics boosted a church’s prestige and drew pilgrims, bringing donations and local prosperity. Debates over authenticity and the dramatic “translation” (transfer) or even theft of relics were common, underscoring their immense spiritual and social value in the Middle Ages.
