Croatia joined the European Union on July 1, 2013, becoming the EU’s 28th member. The other options mark different stages: Slovenia joined in 2004, Bulgaria in 2007, and Turkey remains a candidate country, not a member.

Croatia’s accession followed years of reforms after the Yugoslav wars, including strengthening the rule of law, tackling corruption, and cooperating with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
