Mao Zedong is widely considered responsible for the highest death toll among 20th-century dictators. Historians estimate that his policies—especially the Great Leap Forward (1958–62), which triggered a catastrophic famine, along with the Anti-Rightist Campaign and the Cultural Revolution (1966–76)—led to roughly 30–45 million deaths, with some estimates higher.
