This dog shows a dense, fluffy underlayer with longer, harsher outer hairs—a classic double coat. You can see the plush thickness around the neck and body that signals a soft insulating undercoat beneath protective guard hairs. That two-layer system keeps the dog warm in winter and cool in summer by trapping air and shedding water.

Double-coated breeds (think Huskies, Akitas, German Shepherds) “blow their coat” seasonally, shedding the undercoat in large clumps. Remember: double coat = “parka over sweater” (guard hairs over undercoat). Long coat just means length, not layers; single coats lack the dense underfur; curly coats have tight curls like a Poodle. For care, frequent brushing is great—avoid shaving, which can damage coat function.
