The story behind the answer
Priests, called hem-netjer (“servant of the god”), performed Egypt’s daily temple cult. They observed strict purity, opened the shrine each morning, awakened the god’s statue, washed, anointed, and clothed it, burned incense, and presented food offerings. They also maintained temples, organized festivals, and managed vast temple estates. The powerful High Priest of Amun at Karnak is a famous example.
