Chemical Elements
What element has the symbol 'Lv'?
Answer
Livermorium
Explanation
Lv is the IUPAC symbol for Livermorium, element 116. It’s a synthetic, superheavy element first created in 2000 by bombarding curium-248 with calcium-48 at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna) in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory—the namesake honored when IUPAC approved “livermorium” in 2012. As a chalcogen (group 16) beneath polonium, it’s extremely unstable, existing only for fractions of a second before decaying.
To avoid mix-ups: Lutetium is Lu, Lawrencium is Lr, and “Livanium” isn’t an element. Memory tip: Lv → LiVermore → Livermorium, and picture it “living” under polonium in the chalcogen column.
