The story behind the answer
Interphase is when eukaryotic cells spend most of their lives, carrying out everyday functions, growing, and preparing to divide. It includes G1 (growth and normal work), S (DNA replication), and G2 (final checks and preparation). In contrast, prophase and telophase are brief stages of mitosis (M phase), and “stasis” isn’t a real cell-cycle stage. Because mitosis is comparatively quick, the majority of a cell’s timeline is interphase.
To remember: “Grow, Synthesize, Gear up” for G1–S–G2. Or think “IPMAT,” with Interphase before Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase—interphase dominates the clock. Many cells even enter G0, a long-lived rest state similar to G1, reinforcing that cells spend far more time living and preparing than actually dividing.
