Ivan IV (“Ivan the Terrible”) was crowned in 1547 as the first ruler to adopt the title “Tsar of All Rus’,” elevating Muscovy’s status from a grand principality to a centralized autocracy. His early reign brought reforms and expansion, notably the conquests of Kazan and Astrakhan, which opened the Volga to Russian control.

His epithet Grozny is closer to “formidable” than “terrible,” though his later rule turned violent with the Oprichnina.
