The story behind the answer

This scene depicts a dog show with judges comparing dogs against written ideals—exactly how formal breed standardization emerged in the 19th century. Kennel clubs (e.g., The Kennel Club in 1873 and the AKC in 1884) created stud books and detailed breed standards for appearance, movement, and temperament, and judges awarded prizes to the dogs that best matched those standards.

Before this, dogs were bred mainly for function (herding, hunting, guarding). Dog shows transformed many working “types” into fixed “breeds” with consistent traits. These standards helped preserve breed characteristics and enabled organized breeding, but also shifted focus toward conformation, sometimes at the expense of function and genetic diversity.
