German Shepherd — Dogs
Which dog breed is shown?
Answer
German Shepherd
The story behind the answer
This is a German Shepherd: note the black “saddle” over the back, tan legs and chest, a substantial head and frame, erect ears, and a bushy tail. Belgian Malinois are lighter-built with a short fawn coat and black mask; Belgian Tervurens have longer, richer fawn coats with a black overlay but no distinct saddle; Dutch Shepherds are typically brindle (tiger-striped).
Bred in late-19th-century Germany by Max von Stephanitz, German Shepherds became iconic working dogs for police, military, and search-and-rescue thanks to their intelligence and trainability. Memory tip: saddle-and-tan = German Shepherd; fawn with mask = Malinois; long, mahogany-fawn coat = Tervuren; brindle = Dutch Shepherd.
