Born in 12th‑century France under Abbot Suger at Saint‑Denis, it spread across Europe to places like Chartres, Notre‑Dame, and Cologne. The emphasis on verticality and “lux nova” (new light) mirrored medieval theology, lifting the eye heavenward while immersing worshippers in radiant color. Beyond devotion, such cathedrals showcased urban pride, patronage, and a leap in engineering that defined the later Middle Ages.
