Greek Mythology · Question
Which monster could turn people to stone with her gaze?
Answer
Medusa
The story behind the answer
Medusa is the most famous of the Gorgons—monstrous sisters with snakes for hair—whose direct gaze turned onlookers to stone. In myth, the hero Perseus avoided her deadly look by using Athena’s reflective shield, beheading Medusa and later wielding her head as a petrifying weapon.
To remember: Harpies snatch, Sirens sing, Chimera breathes fire—but only Medusa’s stare makes statues. Her story also births wonders: from her blood sprang Pegasus, the winged horse.
