The Sphinx is the riddle-asking creature of Greek myth, haunting the road to Thebes. She posed a famous challenge—“What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?”—and devoured those who failed. Oedipus answered “a human,” breaking her curse and saving the city.
