The story behind the answer

He composed the initial c. 4,000-line section of Le Roman de la Rose around 1230, crafting a dream-vision allegory of courtly love. The poem was later vastly expanded by Jean de Meun to some 22,000 lines, which is why he is linked to it only “partly.”

As one of the Middle Ages’ most read works, The Romance of the Rose shaped medieval ideas about love, rhetoric, and allegory, and later provoked heated debate (the Querelle de la Rose) over its treatment of women. Geoffrey Chaucer even translated a portion into Middle English. By contrast, Chrétien de Troyes specialized in Arthurian romances, Marie de France in lais, and Adam de la Halle in lyric and early drama—making them unlikely candidates for this particular allegorical masterpiece.
