Who made the prophecy about Harry and Voldemort?

The story behind the answer

Sybill Trelawney, Hogwarts’ Divination professor, delivered the prophecy to Albus Dumbledore during her job interview at the Hog’s Head. Severus Snape overheard part of it and told Voldemort, setting in motion the attack on the Potters. The prophecy foretold a child “born as the seventh month dies,” marked as Voldemort’s equal—“neither can live while the other survives.”

A memory trick: Sybill sounds like “sibyl,” the ancient word for a prophetess. She makes only two genuine prophecies in the series; this is the first. Dumbledore didn’t prophesy; McGonagall teaches Transfiguration; Bellatrix is a Death Eater, not a seer. Remember Trelawney means the true seer whose words shaped Harry’s fate.
