Science General · Question
The human heart has how many chambers?
Answer
4
The story behind the answer
The human heart has four chambers: two atria (upper) and two ventricles (lower). The right atrium and ventricle receive deoxygenated blood from the body and pump it to the lungs, while the left atrium and ventricle receive oxygenated blood from the lungs and pump it out to the rest of the body. This separation allows efficient, high-pressure circulation to tissues and prevents mixing of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood.
Context helps memory: fish have 2 chambers, most amphibians and reptiles have 3, and mammals and birds evolved 4—supporting warm-blooded, energy-demanding lifestyles. Remember: Right = Respiratory (to the lungs); Left = the rest (to the body). This “double circulation” design is key to delivering oxygen quickly for brain and muscle function.
