Note the large, decorated initial with burnished gold and vivid pigments, plus intricate foliage and figures in the margins—classic features of an illuminated manuscript. The shimmering gold reflects light (“illuminates”) the page, and the elaborate initials and borders integrate art directly with the text on vellum.

Medieval scribes and artists in monastic scriptoria and later urban workshops used costly materials like gold leaf and ultramarine to honor sacred texts, guide readers, and showcase a patron’s wealth. Unlike gilding (the gold alone), rubrication (red headings/initials), or miniatures (small independent paintings), illumination encompasses the full decorative program that makes the page glow. Famous examples include the Lindisfarne Gospels and later Books of Hours, where text and image fuse to teach, inspire, and dazzle.
