Aprosexia means an inability to concentrate on anything. The term comes from Greek: a- (without) + prosoche (attention), literally “without attention.” It describes markedly impaired focus, often seen in various medical or psychological conditions.

Historically, physicians—especially in the late 19th century—used “aprosexia” in ENT contexts, noting that children with nasal obstruction or enlarged adenoids showed poor attention (“aprosexia nasalis”) that improved after treatment. To remember it, think “prose needs attention”: without attention, you can’t read prose—so a-prose-xia = no attention. Don’t confuse it with aboulia (difficulty making decisions) or orthostatic problems (trouble standing).
