The story behind the answer

Jan Hus, the Czech reformer influenced by John Wycliffe, was summoned to the Council of Constance (1414–1418) under Emperor Sigismund’s promise of safe-conduct. Arrested shortly after arriving in 1414, he was tried for heresy and burned at the stake on July 6 the following year—placing his death squarely within the council’s early proceedings.

His execution ignited the Hussite movement and, soon after, the Hussite Wars (1419–1434). Hus championed preaching in the vernacular, criticized indulgences, and insisted that Scripture held ultimate authority—ideas that foreshadowed the Protestant Reformation. His followers popularized communion “in both kinds” (bread and wine) for laypeople, and he remains a central figure in Czech national and religious history.
