After being captured by Burgundian allies of the English at Compiègne in 1430, Joan was sold to the English and put on a lengthy ecclesiastical trial in Rouen. The proceedings, led by pro-English clergy, scrutinized her visions, attire, and obedience to Church authority. Condemned for heresy after months of interrogation, she was executed on 30 May following that winter–spring trial, the year after her capture.

Her death came after a meteoric rise: she had lifted the Siege of Orléans in 1429 and helped secure Charles VII’s coronation at Reims, shifting momentum in the Hundred Years’ War. Decades later, a retrial in 1456 declared her innocent, and in 1920 she was canonized, becoming a potent symbol of faith, national resilience, and the complexities of medieval politics and justice.
