What do we call the land controlled by a lord?

The story behind the answer

In feudal society, this was land (or rights) a lord granted to a vassal in return for homage, fealty, and services—often knight service. It was the basic unit of feudal tenure, and over time many became hereditary, binding nobles and knights into webs of obligation that structured medieval politics and warfare.

By contrast, the demesne was the portion the lord kept for his own use; a manor was an economic estate comprising the demesne and peasant holdings; and a barony was a large grant held by a baron, often encompassing multiple manors under one noble’s authority.
