Ferdinand Maximilian (Maximilian I of Mexico), an Austrian Habsburg, was the last emperor of Mexico, ruling during the French-backed Second Mexican Empire (1864–1867). Installed by Napoleon III, he hoped to establish a stable monarchy but was captured by republican forces loyal to President Benito Juárez and executed in 1867, ending monarchy in Mexico.
