Bohdan Khmelnytsky (c.1595–1657) was the Hetman (military leader) of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, who in 1648 launched a major uprising against the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. His victories led to the creation of the semi-autonomous Cossack Hetmanate and the 1654 Treaty of Pereyaslav, which aligned the Cossacks with Muscovy—transforming Eastern European politics and shaping Ukrainian identity.
