Middle Ages · Question

True or False: The longbow required years of training to master.

Answer

True

The story behind the answer

Mastering the English longbow demanded years of practice: war bows often drew 100–180 pounds, requiring lifelong conditioning to develop the strength, technique, and endurance to loose arrows quickly and accurately. Archaeology shows skeletal adaptations in veteran archers’ shoulders and arms; skill also meant judging distance, wind, and timing while nocking and releasing 6–12 arrows per minute.

To build this capability, medieval England and Wales embedded archery in daily life. Kings ordered men to practice on Sundays and holidays, and towns kept “butts” for targets. The resulting yeoman archers, armed with yew longbows, dominated key battles of the Hundred Years’ War—Crécy, Poitiers, and Agincourt—where disciplined volleys shattered armored knights long before they reached melee.
