The story behind the answer

The scene shows armored knights wearing tunics marked with crosses, marching under religious banners and clergy—a telltale sign of a papally sanctioned holy expedition. Unlike a pilgrimage (peaceful, unarmed) or the Iberian reconquest (regional), this was a vowed campaign fought under spiritual authority and for spiritual rewards.

Beginning in 1096 after Pope Urban II’s call, participants “took the cross,” received indulgences, and aimed to secure Christian control of Jerusalem and other holy sites. These expeditions continued for two centuries, establishing Latin states, spawning military orders like the Templars and Hospitallers, stimulating Mediterranean trade, and leaving a complex legacy of cultural contact and conflict.
