Medieval society was overwhelmingly agrarian. Most people were peasants—many bound as serfs—living in small villages clustered around fields and a manor. Towns existed as fortified market hubs, but even the largest—Paris, Florence, London—held only tens or a few hundreds of thousands, while the countryside held millions.

Urban life did expand in the High Middle Ages with revived trade, fairs, craft guilds, and leagues like the Hanseatic, yet townspeople remained a minority almost everywhere. The Black Death (1347–52) slashed populations, reshaping labor relations and wages, but it didn’t turn Europe urban; the daily rhythms of plowing, harvesting, and village worship still defined most medieval lives.
