They orbit Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun. Unlike most planetary moons named from Greco-Roman mythology, Uranus’s major moons are named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexander Pope: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. Titania and Oberon were discovered by William Herschel (1787), Ariel and Umbriel by William Lassell (1851), and Miranda by Gerard Kuiper (1948); Voyager 2’s 1986 flyby revealed their detailed surfaces and additional small moons.
