Pigeon—specifically the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia)—has a plump body, small head, short neck with iridescent sheen, and a fleshy cere above a slender bill. Their cooing calls and head-bobbing walk are classic. Unlike parrots they lack a hooked beak and zygodactyl feet; unlike pelicans they’re not waterbirds with pouches; unlike robins they’re larger and gray without a red breast.

Domesticated for millennia, pigeons were prized for homing ability—returning hundreds of miles using sun cues, smells, and Earth’s magnetic field—and served as reliable wartime messengers. They feed squabs with nutrient-rich crop milk, and many pairs mate for life. To remember: the city-square cooer with an iridescent neck and steady wing-clap is the pigeon.
