What is the realm of the light elves?

Alfheim (Old Norse: Álfheimr) is the realm of the light elves (ljósálfar), renowned for beauty, radiance, and fertility. In the Poetic Edda (Grímnismál), the god Freyr is said to have received Alfheim as a “tooth-gift.” This sets it apart from the other realms: Vanaheim is the home of the Vanir gods, Midgard is the world of humans, and Niflheim is a cold, misty world tied to primordial ice and death.

To remember: “Alf-” sounds like “elf,” pointing straight to the elves’ homeland. Also recall the contrast with the dark elves/dwarfs in Svartalfheim—light in Alfheim, dark in Svartalfheim—highlighting Norse myths’ balance of bright and shadowed worlds among the Nine Realms.
