Who were the first two humans created by the gods?

Ask and Embla are the first humans in Norse myth. According to the Poetic and Prose Eddas, Odin and his companions (often Vili and Vé or Hœnir and Lóðurr) found two tree trunks on the seashore and fashioned them into people: Askr (from “ash”) and Embla (possibly “elm” or “vine”). The gods gave them breath, mind, warmth, and senses, then placed them in Midgard, the human realm among the Nine Realms. Remember it this way: Ask = ash, Embla = elm—humans grown from trees. The other pairs are gods or divine figures: Njord and Skadi are a mismatched couple, Odin and Frigg are the chief god and goddess, and Balder and Hela are siblings. Only Ask and Embla are human.
