Who is Jörmungandr's father?

The story behind the answer

Loki is Jörmungandr’s father. In Norse myth, the Midgard Serpent is one of three fearsome children Loki has with the giantess Angrboða: Jörmungandr, the wolf Fenrir, and Hel, queen of the dead. Odin, fearing prophecies about them, cast Jörmungandr into the ocean encircling Midgard, where it grew so vast it could grasp its own tail.

Tip to remember: Loki the trickster “spawns trouble in threes”—serpent, wolf, and Hel. Thor is Jörmungandr’s archenemy, not his parent; the two are fated to slay each other at Ragnarök after Thor fishes the serpent on earlier adventures. That rivalry often causes the mix-up.
