How many chromosomes are in your body cells?

Humans have 46 chromosomes in most body (somatic) cells, organized into 23 pairs—so 23 is correct when counting pairs. Each parent contributes 23 single chromosomes via their gametes (sperm or egg), which combine to form those 23 pairs in the embryo.

Chromosomes are DNA packages carrying genes. Of the 23 pairs, 22 are autosomes and 1 pair is sex chromosomes (XX or XY). A helpful memory cue: “23 from me, 23 from you,” or think of the company name “23andMe.” Errors in chromosome number can cause conditions like trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), highlighting why accurate chromosome pairing matters.
