Where did the pineapple plant originate?

The story behind the answer

South America is the pineapple’s birthplace. The species Ananas comosus was first domesticated by Indigenous peoples in the region between southern Brazil and Paraguay, then spread across the tropical Americas and the Caribbean long before Europeans arrived. Columbus encountered pineapples in 1493 and brought them to Europe, and much later Hawaii became a major producer—but not the origin.

Remember it this way: in many languages, pineapple is called “ananas,” from the Tupi-Guarani word “nanas,” linking it to its South American roots. Also, think “S for Spiky fruit, S for South America.”
