Paw pads — Dogs

The story behind the answer

This image shows the underside of a dog’s paw, with the large central metacarpal/metatarsal pad and several smaller digital pads—together called paw pads. It’s not the dew claw (a higher “thumb”-like nail), nor just foot fur or only individual toe pads.

Paw pads are thick, rubbery cushions made of fatty tissue and tough, keratinized skin. They act like built-in sneakers: absorbing shock, providing traction, insulating against cold and heat, and helping protect against rough terrain. Pads also contain sweat glands that aid cooling and leave scent markers. Color can vary with coat pigment and may change as dogs age. Care tip: avoid hot pavement, trim fur between pads, and moisturize cracks. Memory trick: paw pads = the paw’s “sneakers.”
