The story behind the answer

The medieval wall-walk behind battlements let garrisons patrol the curtain wall, rush to threatened points, and shoot from the crenels while sheltering behind merlons. It’s literally the walkway atop the rampart, hence the name.

Known also as the wall-walk or French chemin de ronde, it often stood behind a crenellated parapet and could be extended with wooden hoardings or equipped with stone machicolations to drop missiles straight down. In the gunpowder age, walls gained gunloops along this route.
