True or False: The Reconquista involved both warfare and diplomacy over centuries.

Answer

True

The story behind the answer

Spanning from the early 700s to 1492, the Iberian Reconquista was not a single, nonstop war. Christian kingdoms such as Castile, Aragon, León, and Portugal alternated campaigns with truces, tribute (parias) from Muslim taifas, marriage alliances, and formal treaties like Cazola (1179) dividing targets. Famous clashes—Toledo (1085) and Las Navas de Tolosa (1212)—sat alongside negotiated surrenders, most notably the Capitulations of Granada in 1492.

The political map constantly shifted: Muslim polities fragmented into taifas, later reinforced by Almoravids and Almohads; nobles and mercenaries (like El Cid) served across lines. Popes granted crusading privileges, yet day-to-day expansion often hinged on diplomacy and local bargains, allowing Mudejar communities to remain under Christian rule—for a time—after conquests.
