The English king nicknamed the Lionheart was a principal commander of the Third Crusade (1189–1192). He led campaigns in the Holy Land, captured Acre, defeated Saladin at Arsuf, and negotiated the Treaty of Jaffa, which restored coastal strongholds and secured Christian pilgrimage rights to Jerusalem—even though the city itself remained under Ayyubid control.

By contrast, Godfrey of Bouillon and Bohemond of Taranto were leaders of the First Crusade, nearly a century earlier, and Pope Urban II preached the First Crusade in 1095 rather than commanding armies in the Third. Other rulers tied to the Third Crusade included Philip II of France and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who drowned en route.
