The story behind the answer

Constantine I won the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD, defeating his rival Maxentius and securing control of the Western Roman Empire. According to tradition, Constantine saw a vision of the Chi-Rho (☧) and the words “In this sign, conquer,” prompting him to place the symbol on his soldiers’ shields. Maxentius’s army broke on the Tiber, and he drowned during the retreat when a temporary bridge collapsed.
